ACHNAMARA
Achnamara is in Argyllshire on
the Kintyre Peninsula.
In early 2008 I visited Achnamara. This was the first time I had returned here since leaving
at about the age of 3. Although I was very young at the time of
leaving, I still had a lot of memories of the place.

| Although I do not
remember exactly which house we lived in, Margaret (Big sis)
thinks it was one of these (there are 4 houses here) probably
the house on the end, to the right. In the picture above, this
would be the first house.
Behind these houses is Loch Sween. After a bad storm one night
we awoke to find the chicken coup floating down the loch and
away to sea. Dad went out in a rowing boat to retrieve it but
as far as I can remember there was only one chicken left which
we had for dinner. |

In this picture you can
see almost the entire length of the village. The turn off to
the right is another line of houses that back onto Loch Sween,
the other end of that can be seen in the picture above. Behind
where this picture is taken is the village hall and a couple
more cottages, one of which used to be the shop. |

| It was right here at this
Wee Burn (Little Stream) that I sat fishing one day with a stick
and a piece of string. I didn't have much luck!! |

The School House
I was too wee (Little) to
go to school.... Every day mum would give me money to go to the
shop to buy crisps to take to my sister and brothers who were in
school. To me of course this was a big job, the long walk to the
shop and back and then the climb up the BIG hill to the school!!!!
On my return. The shop is
no longer there and the BIG hill is no more than a gentle slope. |

KAIMEND
Kaimend is in Lanarkshire.
July 2008 I returned to
Kaimend, Since leaving, I had been here one time in the 1970's.
We lived in Kaimend until
moving to Liverpool, I was aged about 7 years old at that time.

| For those of you who
didn't believe me when I said you could throw a stone from one
end of the village to the other.... Well this is just about the
size of it.
A short distance (to me at the time seemed
like miles) up the road and to the left is the farm where I used
to work. Early in the morning I would bring in the cows for
milking, they were often grazing in the fields you can see
behind the houses. One morning I went to bring the cows in from
this field, one was giving birth. The calf was a bull and
because of his temperamental nature the farmer named him Charlie
after my brother. Charlie (the calf) and I got along well and
whenever I entered a field he would come running to greet me.
When I returned there in the 1970's, Charlie was a giant of a
bull, very aggressive and kept in a big cage with thick iron
bars. He did not recognise me and was snorting and stomping like
crazy!!!.... |

The panorama picture
below is just along the road a little. My dad worked for the
forestry commission and just where the cottage is to the left
he had a nursery where he would grow baby trees.
At one time all the
rabbits caught myxomatosis and I remember rabbits with no
eyes, running around the tree which is to the left of the
picture.
In the valley is the
river Medwin, we would play in the river. Dad would send us
out to catch dinner, sometimes he would let us use a fishing
rod but mostly we had to catch fish by hand, we called it
Guddling. If we came back empty handed we would go hungry!!
