I started heading south and was intrigued by signs that said, The Devils Postpile so I headed in that direction. On the way to there, I stopped to take these pictures.

You can not drive to the Devils Postpile, you have to get a bus from the Mammoth Mountain visitor center. The ride down there went past some spectacular scenery but I couldn't get any pictures because of the movement of the bus and the steep winding roads.

The Devils Postpile was formed when Basalt Lava erupted from the Valley of the San Joaquin river filling the valley to nearly 400 feet. the Basalt cooled at a uniform rate causing it to form five or seven sided post like columns.

The Devils Postpile is not the only place with this kind of volcanic formation There is also a similar formation in Yellowstone National Park, it can be seen near Tower Falls where it is part of Yellowstone Canyon but the most famous are Giants Causway in County Antrim, Northern Ireland and Fingals Cave, The Isle Of Staffa, Scotland. These were both part of the same gigantic Basalt eruption but are now divided by many miles of the Irish Sea.
