Yellowstone is truly a wonderful place and I could easily have spent six weeks there but there were lots of other places I wanted to visit and I decided to move on. My main destination now was Yosemite National Park in California. I left the town of West Yellowstone and and I was soon in Idaho. The highway followed the Snake River through Idaho Falls past Pocatello and on to Twin Falls. There I turned South and headed into Nevada. This highway was going through desert scrubland the kind of scene I'd only ever seen in the movies. I had decide that I would stop at Wells City.

Now this was strange to me.... In Britain, a City is usually very old, usually pretty big and there is a cathedral..... Approaching Wells City, I passed a sign saying Welcome To Wells City..... then there was nothing for miles..... Eventually I reached a small town, which was in fact not much more than a truck stop. Now don't let me take anything away from the good people of Wells City, it's just that to me a stranger in the land, I expected a CITY!!!

The Snake River Idaho

Now heading along Interstate 80 my car wasn't going good. I had tried without success to get through to the hire people, so I stopped quite early in the day in Fernley. I had decided that I'd go to Reno the next day to change my car. While in Fernley I went for a drink in a bar called "Another Bar" The people there were very friendly, one person even went home to get a hat for me and when he said he couldn't find it so the barmaid climbed a ladder to get one off the wall In the morning I took their advice and went to visit Pyramid Lake.

Pyramid Lake

I had to drive along a small desert road up in to the mountains to get to here. The view of the blue crystal water was astounding against the desert scenery.

I now went to Reno airport where I changed my car, I'd had no intention of visiting any of the big cities on my journey but this was forced upon me so I drove around the city for a while before heading toward Lake Tahoe.

Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe is such a beautiful lake but very crowded. It was really difficult to get the pictures I wanted.

The Sierra Nevada Mountains

There were many easier roads leading toward Yosemite but I chose to take the high mountain passes, these pictures show why :)

Mono Lake

The highway turned and this lake came into view like shimmering crystal. With no outlets, Mono lake is one of the most saline lakes in the world 2-3 times saltier than the ocean. The Unique geology and chemistry of the lake causes a very unusual kind  of limestone called Tufa that forms towers under the water. All around the lake edge there is a thick carpet of Alkali flies.
