YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK

Yellowstone is the worlds first National park, created in 1872. The park covers a huge area of north western Wyoming bordering onto Montana and Idaho most of which is a volcanic caldera. Yellowstone is not like our usual vision of a volcano, scientists call it a Super Volcano, when it erupts the whole area explodes sending huge amounts of magma and gasses from the Earth with devastating effect across the planet (Mt. St Helen was just a firecracker in comparison). They believe that Yellowstone last erupted about 640,000 years ago and that it erupts in 600,000 year intervals, so the next one is due any time now. In it's last eruption Yellowstone caused lava and pyroclastic flows that covered an area of over 3,000 square miles(4,828 km). There was enough material ejected to cover the entire USA with ash 5 inches (12.7cm) deep. Evidence of that last explosion has been found as far away as Iowa where it is a few inches (cm) thick and in drilling cores from the Gulf Of Mexico. Scientists observing the movement of the magma chamber under Yellowstone have determined that Parts of the park have risen as much as 27 Inches (70 cm) in the past few decades. There are over 10,000 hot springs and Geysers in Yellowstone, evidence of one of the worlds largest active volcano's.

I had booked into a motel near the entrance to Grand Teton for three nights from there I explored Grand Teton and before long found myself at the entrance to Yellowstone National Park. My first impressions were not good, mile after mile of fire and storm damage. I first made my way to see Old Faithful.

Around The Geysers

The following pictures are from the Upper Geyser Basin where Old Faithful is. There are Geyser basin's and volcanic activity all over the park. I could fill this website with pictures of them, but I don't want you to get too bored The different colors in the hot springs are caused by mineral deposits and beds of bacteria. Different types of bacteria live at different temperatures causing the weird patterns of color.

Mud Volcano and Sulphur Caldron

The smell from these pools is like rotten eggs

The Bison was enjoying the heat that was coming out of the ground and wasn't bothered by the crowds of people that were close to him.

Yellowstone Lake

The North shore of Yellowstone Lake (where these pictures are taken) is rising because of volcanic activity causing the lake to shift to the south. This is happening very quickly (in geological terms) at about 1 centimeter a year. Scientist believe that this is an indication that the Caldera is beginning to bulge ready for its next eruption.

I now moved from my motel in Wyoming to the town of West Yellowstone in Montana so that I could explore the north of the park.

Yogi Bear

My only sighting of a bear. Yellowstone is a strange place in that, if you stop your car for any reason everyone else will stop to see what you are looking at   I had no choice but to stop to see this bear because the road was jammed with cars already

Tower Falls and Yellowstone River

My niece Dawn (Hi Dawniepops ) had asked me to get lots of pictures of waterfalls, with that in mind  I had climbed up the side of a hill to get a better angle for my photograph. While leaning on a boulder to steady the camera for my shot, I heard shouting from above, I looked up to see a huge rock rolling down the hill toward me. I ducked behind the boulder and the rock bounced off it and went over my head. The fella who has set the rock rolling ran down expected to find me dead. I got up and said to him...... Ya missed, wanna try again.
