YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK |
Yellowstone is the worlds first
National park, created in 1872. The park covers a huge area of north
western Wyoming bordering onto
Montana and Idaho most of which is a volcanic caldera. Yellowstone is not like our
usual vision of a volcano,
scientists call it a Super Volcano, when it erupts the whole area explodes
sending huge amounts of magma and gasses from the Earth with devastating
effect across the planet (Mt. St Helen was just a firecracker in
comparison). They believe that Yellowstone last erupted about 640,000 years
ago and that it erupts in 600,000 year intervals, so the next one is
due any time now. In it's last eruption Yellowstone caused lava and pyroclastic
flows that covered an area of over 3,000 square miles(4,828 km). There was enough
material ejected to cover the entire USA with ash 5 inches (12.7cm) deep. Evidence
of that last explosion has been found as far away as Iowa where it is a
few inches (cm) thick and in drilling cores from the Gulf Of Mexico. Scientists observing the movement of the magma chamber under
Yellowstone have determined that Parts of the park have risen as much
as 27 Inches (70 cm) in the past few decades. There are over 10,000 hot
springs and Geysers in Yellowstone, evidence of one of the worlds largest
active volcano's.
